Create the categories and asset fields your organisation records.
Do this once, before the first assets go in. Both settings apply to your whole organisation, and both can be changed later without disturbing what is already recorded.
Categories
A category is an asset type — litter bin, bench, lamp post — and carries the colour its pins take on the map. Its first three letters also become the prefix of its assets' IDs (see Asset IDs and labels). A new organisation starts with six: Bin, Lamp post, Bench, Tree, Sign and Other. They are yours to rename, recolour or remove.
- Go to Settings › Categories.
- Press Add category. In the dialog, give it a Name and pick a Colour, then press Add category again.
- Use Edit on any row to rename it or change its colour. Both take effect everywhere at once.
- Remove deletes a category. Its assets are kept with all their data, and become uncategorised.
Asset fields
Beyond category, status, location and description, asset fields are what your municipality specifically records — install date, material, serial number, last inspection.
- Go to Settings › Asset fields and press Add field. The form opens in a dialog.
- Give it a Label and a Type: Text, Number, Date or Choice.
- For a Choice field, type each option into Choices and press Enter — they become chips you can remove individually.
- Leave Shown for empty and the field applies to every category. Name one or more categories and it only appears on those.
Deleting a field destroys nothing. Values already recorded stay on their assets and simply become one-off fields on those records. Renaming a field's label is safe too — mapzaa never renames the underlying key, so nothing is orphaned.
Names you type — categories, field labels, choices — get their first letter capitalised on save, so the dashboard reads tidily. A capital already inside the first word, as in “iPhone dock”, is left exactly as you typed it.
